(영어 구동사) Call? 부르다, 전화하다 아냐?

Call 역시 구동사로 이용할 때 수많은 표현이 가능하다. 원어민의 느낌을 찾고 싶으면 그만큼 구동사 공부가 중요하니 꼭 알고 넘어가자.

 

-Call off
취소하다.
They called off the meeting this morning.

-Call out
소리치다.
It was so embarassing she was calling out my name at the market.

-Call on
요청하다.
The teacher called on me to tell her why it happened.

-Call in
(누군가를) 불러서 오게하다.
Can I call in a friend?

-Call for
필요로 하다.
This issue calls for immediate feedback.

-Call back
다시 전화하다.
I'll call you back later after lunch.

-Call it day
하루 일을 마치다.
Let’s call it a day and go back home.

-Call someone names
비난하다.
We don't need to call names.

-Call the shots
지휘하다.
Is there anyone who is willing to call the shots for this project?

-Call attention to
~에 주의를 끌다.
I just wanted to call attention to any issue we might face in the future.
사전만 보면 뜻이 뭔가 이상한데 '다른 사람들의 주의를 끌만한 주제를 얘기하다' 정도로 이해하면 되겠다.


이 역시 Call 의 느낌을 잘 이해했다면 위의 표현들을 보고 아 이게 이래서 이런 뜻을 갖는구나 자동으로 고개가 끄덕여질 것이다. 이전 구동사 포스팅할 때부터 쭉 얘기하지만 결국 원래 동사의 느낌을 아는 것이 제일 중요하다. 그 이후엔 느낌만으로도 충분히 이해 가능하기 때문.
